Turkey season is here. Not every state is in season yet, but each week, another state opens its season to turkey hunters. Are you ready? Have you scouted? Is your camo sprayed down with something to protect you from ticks?
Most importantly, did you pattern your shotgun or make sure your bow is tuned? Let's dive into making sure everything is ready for opening day. Turkey season has arrived! While not every state has opened its season yet, more states become available each week for turkey hunters. Are you prepared? Have you done your scouting? Is your camouflage sprayed with a tick repellent? Most importantly, have you patterned your shotgun or ensured that your bow is properly tuned? Let's focus on getting everything ready for opening day!
**.410 Power and Accuracy**
The .410 shotgun has seen a resurgence since ammunition manufacturers began producing TSS (Tungsten Super Shot). I started using a .410 after my neck surgery, and I absolutely love it. The TSS levels the playing field, allowing me to carry a lightweight shotgun into the woods that still has plenty of knockdown power and range. My Mossberg SA-410, equipped with a Hawke Turkey scope, is a deadly combination. Be sure to match your TSS with the appropriate choke for the best results.
**.410 In Action**
This hunt took place during the 2023 Pennsylvania Spring Turkey season. I set up on this gobbler for five consecutive days, and finally, on the fifth day, I got him to come to me. As you will see, the .410 and the Verdict TSS ammunition did the job! It was an exciting hunt that I will always remember.
** SA-28 **
A few years ago, Mossberg introduced a 28-gauge shotgun, and I knew I had to have one. I have been impressed with both its accuracy and weight. It didn't take long for me to sight in the gun using a Hawke Turkey scope. The 28-gauge delivers a deadly pattern out to 40 yards with minimal recoil.
Flatten Em"
Despite the steady rain, I was determined to head out on the opening day of the 2025 season. Yes, it was wet and unpleasant, but you can’t harvest a turkey from the couch. A few days before the season started, I set up my ground blind and hoped the birds would cooperate. I sat in the rain for a few hours, spotted a few hens, and then the "Big Boys" finally arrived. The 28 and Verdict TSS took down the gobbler.
Enjoy the Work
I love shooting my shotguns before the season. Every year, I hear horror stories from hunters who forgot to check their shotguns, which cost them a bird. To avoid this, grab some splatter targets and a few rounds of your favorite turkey ammo, then head to the range to pattern your gun. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure it’s ready for action.
